API STANDARD 653
Tank Inspection
Repair, Alteration,
and Reconstruction
WHAT IS API-653
API 653 is the industry standard for aboveground storage tank inspection, repair, alteration, and reconstruction. Published by the American Petroleum Institute, it provides the requirements for maintaining tank integrity throughout its service life after a tank has entered operation. Unlike API 650, which governs new tank construction, API 653 focuses on in-service welded steel aboveground storage tanks and the ongoing evaluation of the foundation, bottom, shell, roof, structure, and nozzles.
The standard establishes inspection methods and intervals, corrosion assessment, remaining-life evaluation, and fitness-for-service criteria. It also covers authorized repairs and alterations, including plate replacement, patches, bottom work, relocation, and reconstruction, with work generally required to meet API 650 equivalence. Nondestructive examination, testing, and documented authorization are part of that process.
Our API 653 certified inspectors follow this standard to deliver inspections that ensure safety, compliance, and maximum asset uptime. Clear reporting and practical recommendations help facility owners and operators identify corrosion and deterioration early, support regulatory compliance, and make informed maintenance decisions before integrity issues affect operations.
