BRIEF

A

What is PEI

What is a Pressure Equipment Inspector (PEI)?

A National Board Pressure Equipment Inspector (PEI) is an individual certified under the National Board’s elective program (NB-438) who has demonstrated knowledge of inspection processes for boilers, pressure vessels, and related piping. The certification requires relevant work experience, successful completion of National Board training courses, and passing the associated examinations. PEIs may specialize in one or more categories—Inservice, ASME Construction, or Repairs/Alterations—and can work as independent contractors or for manufacturers, repair organizations, equipment owners, or other entities involved in pressure equipment.

Importantly, PEI certification enhances an individual’s technical competence and recognition in the field and can serve as a prequalification pathway toward a full National Board Commission. The PEI credential supports improved safety, quality, and uniformity of inspection practices related to the installation, operation, maintenance, repair, and alteration of pressure-retaining equipment under the framework of the NBIC and related codes. AITNDE’s PEI support complements our

                          and                                                    work across Arizona.

Where in-service mechanical integrity programs also reference API standards, AITNDE supports API 510 / 570 / 653 scopes alongside NBIC practice—see our

                                                                                   page for tank-focused work.

BRIEF

B

Inspections

Why routine in-service inspections matter

Routine in-service inspections are essential to maintaining the safety and reliability of boilers, pressure vessels and related piping systems. Over time, these components are exposed to operating stresses, corrosion, erosion, thermal cycling, and other degradation mechanisms that can create these issues early—before they progress to leaks, ruptures or catastrophic failures— protecting personnel, the public and the surrounding facility.

Beyond immediate safety, consistent inspections support regulatory compliance, extend equipment service life, and reduce unplanned downtime and costly emergency repairs. By documenting the conditions of pressure-retaining items in accordance with the National Board Inspection Cose (NBIC) and applicable jurisdictional requirements, owners and operators can make informed decisions about maintenance, repairs, or replacement, ensuring continued safe and efficeient operation.

In Arizona, boilers and related pressure equipment fall under the Industrial Commission of Arizona (ICA) / ADOSH Boiler Safety Section framework, including Special Inspector pathways for certificate inspections. AITNDE's PEI support is framed for shop and owner quality programs and NBIC-aligned practice—it is not a claim of a National Board Commission or state Special Inspector appointment. For official jurisdictional requirements, see the                                                                .
