
DESTRUCTIVE TESTING
Destructive testing is a critical evaluation method used to determine the precise point at which a material, weld, or component will fail under controlled stress. By intentionally applying increasing loads until the specimen deforms or fractures, this process reveals essential data about strength, ductility, toughness, and overall performance that non-destructive methods alone cannot provide.


In welding and fabrication, destructive testing plays a vital role in qualifying welding procedures (such as Procedure Qualification Records) and verifying that welds meet the mechanical requirements of applicable codes and standards. Common tests include tensile, bend, impact (Charpy), hardness, and macro-etch examinations. Because the tested samples are permanently altered or destroyed during the process, they cannot be returned to service—yet the information gained ensures that production welds will perform safely and reliably in the field.
