Procedure Qualification Testing
Welding procedures are generally categorized into two primary documents: the Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) and the Procedure Qualification Record (PQR). The PQR documents the actual welding parameters used during the qualification test, along with all associated inspection and mechanical test results obtained from the test specimens.
Specimen size and dimensions must conform to the requirements specified in the applicable AWS or ASME Code sections. Following completion of welding and any required post-weld heat treatment, the test specimens are submitted to a metallurgical laboratory for mechanical testing. A typical PQR requires two tension tests and either four side-bend tests or two root- and face-bend tests.
Welding Procedure Specification
A Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) is a formal written document that describes the welding procedures to be followed. It provides direction to welders and welding operators for producing sound, high-quality production welds in accordance with applicable code requirements. The primary purpose of a WPS is to ensure that accepted, repeatable, and reliable welding techniques are consistently applied.
A separate WPS is typically developed for each material alloy and welding process combination. Specific codes and standards issued by engineering societies often drive the development of a company’s WPS. Each WPS is supported by a corresponding Procedure Qualification Record (PQR).
